Elsa Shawl

I took advantage of this week's snowstorm to finally take some photos of the Frozen-inspired shawl I made last winter.

I started making triangle shawls after becoming obsessed with the show Outlander, which has some amazing knit wardrobe pieces (I'll do another post soon for my Outlander shawl). When Frozen II came out, I decided to put an Arandellian spin on it.

Like many of my knit & crochet projects, this one started with me finding some yarn that inspired me, and sort of snowballed from there (get it? Snowballed? 'Cause Frozen?) Anyway...

I tend to let my projects take shape as I go, rather than completely planning them out first. This often results in a lot of trial and error, a lot of unraveling and re-doing sections, and a lot of things that don't come out 100% flawless, but the end result is almost always something one-of-a-kind :)

Is it perfect? No! Would there have been a better way to do it? I'm sure that yes! But I'm just working with the mind-tools that I have, and finding joy in making something, and at the end of the day, I think that's what's important. And, now I have something that makes me feel like a Disney princess :)

Keep reading for more information on how I made this...

How I Did It:

These are a few of the main yarns I used:

I also used several other various blue & white yarns that I had lying around or leftover from other projects.

I started with the basic idea of a triangle shawl, structured similar to this one. As I went, I changed colors and stitches pretty much whenever I felt like it. Since I was using a lot of different yarns with a lot of different weights, I often had to adjust the number of stitches per row (do 2 stitches of a thinner yarn in 1 stitch of a thicker yarn, etc). This required some trial and error, but got easier as I got a feel for it.

I wanted to incorporate some diamond shapes in the shawl, inspired by design elements from Frozen II. I crocheted these individually, and then blocked them. Then I worked them into my shawl as I went.

Since I started this from the center and worked my way out, I just kept adding rows until I had it the size I wanted. When I was done, I added the faux fur yarn around the perimeter, including the top, as trim.

When I was done (or thought I was done), my mom asked if I was going to put some sort of swirl design on it, which I hadn't been planning to do, but once the idea was in my head, I just couldn't... let it go. I crocheted the swirl details on top of the piece, and that was it! Now I'm ready to take on the cold (which, to be honest, never bothered me anyway. Okay now I'm really done).
